THE KÄRNTNER (CARINTHIAN) BAR
OR AMERICAN BAR
was designed and built by Adolph Loos from 1907–1908 and now bears his name – Loos American Bar. Situated above the entrance, a glass mosaic bearing the American flag and the name of the bar rests on four marble pillars. Once you set foot on the marble floor, organized in a green and white checkered pattern, you’ll find yourself in the main room of the bar, which measures only 4.45m x 6.15m (27.36 m2 or roughly 90 ft2), but seems to go on forever. This is thanks to the mirrored walls which reflect the honeycolored marble paneled ceilings and the rows of marble columns along the walls, creating a open space that seems to stretch on endlessly from the bar.
Small seating niches flanked by mahogany wood furnishings form an interesting juxtaposition to the checkered floor and translucency of the mirrors.
The bar’s ambience is rounded out through the presence of brass fixtures and a backlit onyx wall above the entrance.
“The clean lines and exquisite materials are the face of this bar. The soul of the space, however, extends far deeper than just the bar itself.”
“Clear lines and noble materials give the bar its character.
The soul is the space that extends far beyond den the bar.”
Adolf Loos
